“I thought it was super cool”: Not Naruto or One Piece, John Cena is a Fan of a Legendary Anime Almost No Gen Z Has Heard of

Anime is loved by millions of people worldwide and some celebrities, too, love to watch anime. One such celebrity is wrestler-turned-actor, John Cena. His favorite anime is Fist of the North Star. The popularity of anime has been on a steady upward trajectory since the 1980s. Masterpieces like Dragon Ball, One Piece Naruto, and Bleach, among others, are the reason why it has grown so much.

The last decade saw many anime being adapted into live adaptations, which attracted people to this genre. The latest is Netflix’s One Piece Live Action, which is a blockbuster. But John Cena is not someone who prefers these anime. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion is a fan of Fist of the North Star. It is something that Gen Z has no idea about.

John Cena, the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, has kept his mouth shut about being an anime fan. But recently, during a podcast, he revealed that he loves anime. But not the new ones. He has his preferences. People will be shocked to know that instead of top names like One Piece or Naruto, the wrestler and actor prefers Fist of the North Star.

During the Whiskey Ginger podcast, held by Andrew Santino, John Cena was asked whether he liked anime or not. John Cena replied to Andrew Santino, “I like certain anime. I was really drawn to post-apocalyptic stuff and I found that at the right time. I thought it was super cool, so growing up I used to watch ‘Fist of the North Star’ a lot.”

Being a champion, his preferences are different from those of normal people. He connects to old anime more than the latest anime. Even though the preferences might differ, it is great to know that John Cena has joined the anime fandom.

John Cena’s Thoughts on Anime

Apart from revealing his favorite anime, John Cena also mentioned what he thinks about the new generation. He said, “This is a classic story of me finding anime in the mid-80s, and that’s my time, then fast forward to what anime is now and me being like, ‘What?’”

Fist of the North Star first aired on March 13, 1987, and ended on February 13, 1988. The show had 43 episodes. The post-apocalyptic anime revolves around a boy named Kenshiro, who uses deadly martial arts called Hokuto Shinken to fight the bad guys. The fighting scenes often showed bloody violent action. Maybe John Cena was inspired by this anime to be a professional wrestler and became a WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
