“It’s true that ‘superior’ devil fruit abilities are a thing”: Even Oda Admitted Creating Some Damn Near Useless Devil Fruits in One Piece

One Piece is filled with a plethora of Devil Fruits, each with its own set of powers. But creating so many of them comes with problems, something that Eiichiro Oda is far too familiar with. While there are some definitely overpowered Devil Fruits in the series, there are also others that are less powerful counterparts but with the same essence.

Despite Devil Fruits being a rare occurrence, One Piece consists of plenty of characters who have consumed these. So, at one point, a few rather useless Devil Fruits become inevitable. And Oda is aware of the same.

Eiichiro Oda confirmed the existence of identical and superior Devil Fruits in One Piece

In a question and answer session, Eiichiro Oda was asked about some Devil Fruits which pretty much looked like improved versions of already existing fruits. Oda admitted that in the One Piece universe, supposedly superior Devil Fruits did exist.

It’s true that “superior” devil fruit abilities are a thing, but as of now, it’s pretty much just these four pairs.-Eiichiro Oda

However, just because some Devil Fruits are superior to their counterparts does not mean that the human who ate it would be stronger. After all, the power and development of the abilities granted by fruits depend on the humans who eat them.

Though there are other fruit pairs out there that might make you wonder don’t they pretty much do the same thing?, these abilities tend to be headed in different directions in terms of how they actually work or what they can do. Also, a superior ability does not necessarily equate to the character’s strength. No ability alone guarantees victory in combat. -Eiichiro Oda

The fruits might virtually look the same, but their abilities are used or portrayed in different manners. Some of the identical Devil Fruits in question are: Ton Ton no Mi and Kilo Kilo no Mi, Beta Beta no Mi and Doru Doru no Mi, Supa Supa no Mi and Buki Buki no Mi, and Pamu Pamu no Mi and Bomu Bomu no Mi.

Both Ton Ton no Mi and Kilo Kilo no Mi allow their users to manipulate their body weight, but since ‘ton’ is a heavier unit than ‘kilograms,’ it allows the user to become much heavier than the maximum limit of Kilo Kilo no Mi.

The Beta Beta no Mi or Stick Stick Devil Fruit allows its user to create limitless amounts of mucus. The Doru Doru no Mi or Wax Wax Fruit, on the other hand, lets the user produce candle wax from their body that can be molded into any shape. The two are similar because they allow the user to create a sticky substance that can trap their opponents.

Another example is the Pamu Pamu no Mi (Pop Pop Fruit) vs the Bomu Bomu no Mi (Bomb Bomb Fruit). While the Pop Pop Fruit lets the user convert any inorganic object they touch to swell and explode, the Bomb Bomb Fruit lets the user detonate their body or limbs. Thus making the latter more powerful.

The Hie Hie no Mi (Chilly Chilly Fruit) that is consumed by Kuzan helps him create and control ice on a massive scale. The Yuki Yuki no Mi (Snow Snow Fruit) allows its users to turn themselves into snow. But since ice is a more potent freezing agent as compared to snow, Kuzan’s ability gains the upper hand.

Of course, one can’t forget about the biggest example of them all: The Magu Magu no Mi Vs the Mera Mera no Mi. Both Devil Fruits give their users fire manipulation powers; however, Magu Magu deals with magma, while Mera Mera is a simple fire-based fruit. The powers of both fruits clashed in the battle at Marineford and the result was Akainu’s magma power winning over Ace’s flames.

The One Piece manga is available to read on Viz Mediaand the anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
