‘The writing of this entire character arc is flawless’: Don’t Let My Hero Academia’s Botched Ending Make You Forget What Kohei Horikoshi Did With Endeavor

2024 was a sad year for My Hero Academia fans as the enticing story by Kohei Horikoshi finally came to an end after entertaining fans for over ten years. The series was one of the most celebrated manga series ever and was placed along with some of the greatest anime pieces of all time. However, there was one flaw with the series that ruined almost everything for many fans.

It was the ending of My Hero Academia that, according to many, was disappointing in many aspects. Considering My Hero Academia’s thrilling narrative, fans expected the series to end quite differently than it originally did, and because of this, it was criticized a lot. But that doesn’t change the fact that the series did justice to one major character.

This character is none other than Enji Todoroki, also known as Flame Hero: Endeavor. He was the No. 1 hero in the My Hero Academia universe, but his personal life was quite disheartening. Ideally, considering his importance, he should have received redemption by the end, but Horikoshi’s plan to let him live with regret made his character even better.

Endeavor’s prideful mistakes that cost him everything

Although in My Hero Academia’s public image, Endeavor was one of the greatest heroes of all time, in reality, he was quite toxic. He portrayed the role of an anti-hero mentor for his children and forced them to pursue a dream that was originally his own. He was so bent on his principles and idealism that he didn’t consider the emotions of anyone else, not even his family.

From his marriage to his children, almost every aspect and every character related to his life in My Hero Academia was focused on his dream, and this made him toxic and brutal, to the point where he mentally abused his wife and forced his child Toya Todoroki towards madness. However, as time passed, Endeavor realized what he had done and how wrong it was.

From there on, he completely changed his actions and his principles and made sure that he paid for his past sins no matter what. He only tried to atone for his sins as the My Hero Academia narrative went on to show him what his past actions had done and how they affected everything around him.

Endeavor’s character didn’t deserve redemption

Endeavor was a significant character in My Hero Academia, as he was one of the strongest forces against the villains in the series. Thus, there were many My Hero Academia fans who believed that Endeavor’s character deserved redemption for his past actions and that his life needed to change for the better. However, if Kohei Horikoshi had done that, it would have ruined his character development.

From the beginning of My Hero Academia, Endeavor was portrayed as an anti-hero who was stern in his principles. But he eventually changes and understands the seriousness of his mistakes.

This is why he decides to atone for it on his own accord and doesn’t expect any forgiveness from his family. He also knows that redemption is not for him at all.

He knows that he can never fix what he did to his family, which is why all he can do is try to be better. If Horikoshi had redeemed him by the end of the series, it would have undermined the brutality of his past actions and, in a way, questioned their morality in My Hero Academia.
